As we age in life, we tend to grow out of things. We grow out of phases and personalities, and we also grow out of things literally in the physical sense. This physical growing can be a parent’s worst nightmare when it comes to buying your children things like clothes and mattresses. It seems that, just as quickly as you buy your child something, they’ve already grown out of it and need a new one. This is especially true for cribs and the mattresses inside them.
With that said, what do you do with these things after they’ve been tossed to the side for the next upgrade? Do you toss out that crib mattress and take a loss, or do you find something to do with it? Reusing old items is a great way to save money. In general, there are many things you can reuse and turn into other things, but old crib mattresses in particular open up a whole new world of possibilities. What are some of the things you can make with them? Keep reading to find out!
1- Make a Dog Bed
It’s ironic to make a new bed for your “fur baby” out of your human baby’s old bed, which is what makes it so perfect. Crib mattresses are typically the perfect size for a dog to lay down on, so just lay it next to a window and you’ll be set to go! For easy cleaning when your dog gets dirty, put the mattress in a large pillowcase or make a cool DIY cover for it. In essentially one easy step, the canine addition to your family will have his very own hand-me-down bed!
2- Turn it Into a Day Bed
Whether for a playroom or even for the adults, daybeds are great for lounging. This DIY recycling project is just as easy as the dog bed, except it just needs one more thing to make it complete. Place your old crib mattress on a large shelfing unit to turn it into a magical day bed for you or your kids! Remember to put the mattress in a cover to allow for easy cleaning. You’ll be thankful for that later! After all, we all know how messy kids can be. You’ll be cleaning mysterious substances off that mattress cover in no time.
3- Create an Outdoor Pallet Board Sofa
Those who experiment with DIY projects love pallet boards. They’re good for everything and anything with just a little bit of imagination. For this innovative idea, you can use your baby’s old crib mattress to create a stylish pallet board sofa to put on your porch or in your backyard! It could even do well in rustic indoor settings, too. The pallet board sofa itself takes a little work, so this isn’t the simplest idea of them all to accomplish. It’s definitely worth it, though!
These three are only the best out of hundreds of ideas you can use to repurpose your baby’s old crib mattress. There are even DIY projects using the wire frame and the crib itself! (The wire frame could make a great hanging storage device with a little work.) Some other crib mattress repurposing ideas include a pallet bench, child’s guest bed, kitchen storage bench, and even a cool reading nook or fort. As you can see, each idea does follow a certain theme, but each one brings something new to the table.
Not only will your kids probably love whatever cool new thing you make out of the crib mattress, you’ll also love the fact that you won’t have to throw it away! The memorabilia of your baby’s childhood is extremely meaningful. If you can find ways to repurpose some of the old items they’ve since grown out of, then you can hold on to the young days just that much longer.
As your children grow older, you’ll always be able to look back on the little mattress they once slept on when they were just a baby. In fact, that might actually be better than taking out the baby photo album when your kid has friends over! (You’ll thank us for that one later, too.)
