One thing you should certainly take seriously is your responsibility to protect your family. While you may think you live in a safe home in a safe neighborhood, the unexpected could still happen at any time.
The unknown can be scary, and it can result in the lives of your family being put at risk. This is why you need to be prepared for any possible circumstance. Even if the chances of something bad happening seem remote, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Below are five things you should store to be prepared for anything.
First Aid Kit
Sudden injuries can occur at nearly anytime for reasons you may have never thought of. For example, one of your children may accidentally cut herself while working on a school project. If that’s the case, you need to take action immediately. Having a first aid kit on hand for these kinds of emergencies is extremely important. This is especially the case if you find yourself in a situation in which the phone lines are down and you can’t call for help.
However, what should be in a first aid kit? According to the Mayo Clinic, a basic first aid kit should contain 46 different items. This includes things like bandages, cold packs, antibiotic ointment, eyewash solution, hydrocortisone cream and more.
Flash Lights, Batteries, and/or Gas
At some point, you are likely to experience a power outage in your neighborhood. This happens when power lines are damaged, and it’s a quite common occurrence in the northern United States during the winter. Since this is something that will likely happen during the year, you need to take precautions. Walking around in a dark home can be dangerous or even fatal. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states there are nearly 32,000 deaths from accidental falls per year. Accidentally falling down the stairs or tripping over something is a real threat in the dark.
This is why you need a cache of flash lights, batteries, and/or gas in an easily accessible location in and outside your home. That way, they can be accessed if no other light source is available. Make sure the batteries are new and have enough flash lights for each member of your family. Also consider the fact that the power could go out for several hours or even days at a time. With that said, plan accordingly by storing gas outside for a generator usage.
Protecting your family from any circumstance also means having weapons available. If you’re the victim of a home invasion, the murder of your family members is a very real possibility. One of the only things that can defend your family in such a situation is a firearm.
However, many people are understandably weary of purchasing a gun. You may fear the possibility of an accidental shooting. However, you can hedge against most of this risk by taking a firearm training course and storing the gun in a gun safe in the master bedroom. That will ensure that only a responsible adult will have access to it.
Another circumstance you may encounter is having your drinking supply contaminated. This often happens as the result of natural disasters that do damage to a city’s infrastructure and water supply. Drinking contaminated water can be deadly. This is why it’s always a good idea to have a good amount of bottled water in storage in case of emergencies.
Bottled water can be stored for the long term. You may notice some bottles have expiration dates on them. These expiration dates are usually only related to the quality and taste of the water. It will still be safe to drink after that point if the bottle is unopened, because water itself does not expire unlike juice or soda.
Certain foods must be eaten within days or weeks before they go bad. Other foods, however, do not expire as soon and may last for years. Try to collect a good amount of imperishable food for emergencies. Things like canned fruits and vegetables, rice and dried meats can last a very long time. If the food nears the expiration date after all that time before an emergency occurs, serve it to your family and replace it with new stock.
