Circuit boards are normally taken for granted until they fail to work. Circuit boards are important electronic elements in the operation of any sort of device nowadays. Therefore, if you suspect any issue with your circuit, you need to seek advice or replace one.
Always remember that there are three electronic agents of evil, these are heat, dirt, and moisture. If these can be avoided, your circuit boards will stay alive for a long time. One reason as to why circuit boards fail is usually because of burns which can be caused by power component failure. When there is over or under voltage on circuit boards, they can easily explode or burn. It can be easy to identify a burnt component, or one can use a meter tester to identify if the circuit board is burnt.
Additionally, PCB (Printed Circuit Boards) components can burn when high temperatures are experienced, especially when there is very little space around them. Circuit boards have a particular amount of heat that they can absorb, which is dependent on their structure and size.
Circuit boards also known as motherboards in computers can become overheated with time, resulting in damaged components. With a specific set of repair skills and a few tools, repairing a circuit board can be done at home.
Examine the size of the area that is burnt and determine the extent of the burn. You will notice the range in color of the burnt portion from black to brown; this material should be removed each time it is identified.
Cut away the burned option using a screwdriver. You will see beveled edges once the burn is cut from the circuit board.
Using a solvent, you can clean the circuit board to clean off the excess particles. A combination of epoxy fluid and powdered fiberglass is then used to fill the area of the circuit board that has been cut. The eliminated layers and the edge of the board now become filled.
Using a small tip of a soldering iron, smoothen the surface of the repaired circuit board. You can also drill holes in the repaired area to place screws to hold the board in position. Always use a small drill bit because of the surface area present.
There are cases where the board can have burnt traces. A specific example can be one in which a new fan placed on the motherboard causes the +12v line between the ATX and the fan to burn. The interesting part about this damage is that the computer will still work, but one cannot use the PCI slots and even the AGP slot while the issue still present. The board needs to be fixed in case you need to add a video card.
The following tools and materials are needed in this process.
– A soldering iron
– A box cutter
– A wire
– A tape
Unplug the computer’s power cable from the wall socket.
Protect the parts on the motherboard during the whole exercise.
Unplug all the chords from the board to avoid any accidents.
Scratch the enamel coating from the motherboard trace. In case you want to solder from one solder pad to another, you can skip this step. If not, continue with the process.
Start from a trace’s end and follow it through to the other end. Spot the burnt spots of the trace and use a box cutter to scratch the enamel coating, until you see a bronze/gold color. Repeat this process on each spot that is burnt.
Using a soldering iron, solder the wire on both ends to the respective spots. Once this is done, the burnt spot will be bridged using a wire, which recreates the connection.
Tape the wires down to keep it in position for a long time.
Plug the power back and turn the computer on. If blue smoke is seen, you will need to check solder the correct positions again. Consider checking the soldered spots in case you have soldered the wrong spots.
